Bucs OC gives update on Baker Mayfield-Kyle Trask battle for starting QB job

Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Dave Canales claims the battle between Baker Mayfield and Kyle Trask for the starting quarterback job is getting "tightened." After the 2022 season ended and the Buccaneers signed Mayfield, they said the former first-overall pick would battle against Trask for the starting quarterback job.

Although Trask was publicly said to have a shot at winning the starting quarterback job with the Buccaneers in 2023, many thought Mayfield was the heavy frontrunner to win the position. According to Bucs offensive coordinator Canales, the battle between Mayfield and Trask is ongoing and the second-round pick from the 2021 NFL draft has a shot at beating out Mayifled for the starting quarterback spot.

"Oh yeah, absolutely. First couple of days, I think the experience that Baker brings — just playing in games, being in camps, going through installs — you could see where the offense was jelling really well.

The timing of the snaps and all that is really critical for us, so probably a little bit of an edge for Baker to start off, just in terms of the smoothness of the offense. But it just took a couple of days for Kyle to really settle in, and then what we saw is, the last two practices Kyle really showed what he can do: stretching the field with his arm, getting the ball out quickly, making decisions.

So I'm really excited about both of those guys and the progression that they've made throughout the last couple of days," Canales said, via The Tampa Bay Times. In June, Mayfield said the stint with the Los Angeles Rams toward the end of the 2022 season was a blessing for him.

“I’m a firm believer that everything happens for a reason. It was the first time I had fun playing football in a few years. It brought that feeling of having that success and really remembering what it was all about, Kind of hit the reset button for me," Mayfield said. Now, Mayfield is hoping to also do well with the Buccaneers.
