49ers coach Kyle Shanahan addresses latest criticism directed at Trey Lance

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan described Trey Lance as "extremely smart and very socially aware" following the latest criticism that the quarterback received. On Sunday, Lance started the 49ers' preseason opener against the Las Vegas Raiders.

In his time on the field, Lance went 10-of-15 for 112 yards and one touchdown. Also, Lance was sacked four times. Although it wasn't a disastrous performance, Lance - the third overall pick of the 2021 NFL draft - again heard the criticism.

“It just goes with the territory. It goes with it for quarterbacks. It goes with it for anybody who’s a high draft pick but especially a quarterback. Trey is extremely smart and very socially aware. He knows how the world works.

So he does his best, which I think he does a damn good job of, of trying to block that out and focus on getting better, and I think that’s what he’s done so far," Shanahan said of criticism directed at Lance.

Shanahan defends Lance, reveals plans for this weekend

On Saturday, the 49ers are taking on the Denver Broncos in their second preseason game.

For now, the plan is to have Sam Darnold as the starting quarterback. Also, coach Shanahan revealed Brock Purdy - who is expected to be the 49ers' starting quarterback in 2023 - might get some playing time in the second half against the Broncos.

"We plan on Sam going the first half [against the Broncos Saturday] still. We just finished practice here, so I'm going to talk to the trainers with the rest of our team and everything. I might get Brock in there for a little bit.

I have not finalized that yet, but thinking about playing the ones, for possibly a series, a little in the first quarter," Shanahan said. Against the Broncos, the 49ers will likely give Lance some playing time as well. If Lance gets playing time, it will be interesting to see how he does.
