Liverpool won a big hit in the English Premier League against Manchester City. Thanks to a goal by Mohamed Salah (76th), the "Reds" beat the champions 1-0 on Sunday and thus moved up to the eighth place. City, meanwhile, is second after their first defeat of the season, four points behind leaders Arsenal, who won 1-0 at Leeds.
Salzburg's upcoming Champions League opponents Chelsea won 2-0 at Aston Villa and thus consolidated fourth place. Manchester United only drew 0-0 at home against Newcastle, while Styrian coach Ralph Hasenhüttl and Southampton drew 1-1 with West Ham in front of their home crowd.
Haaland is left empty-handed this time
A high-class game developed at Anfield Road from the start, and both teams had chances. The best before the break were awarded by Diogo Jota (23rd) and Erling Haaland (36th) with headers from a good position.
The second half was even more turbulent. First of all, ManCity goalie Ederson defused a top chance from Salah (51st), practically in return, the guests celebrated the supposed 1-0 through Phil Foden. However, the goal was disallowed after VAR intervention because Haaland committed a jersey offense to Fabinho in the process.
Ironically, in a phase in which City seemed to be gaining the upper hand, Liverpool struck decisively. A free-kick from Kevin de Bruyne landed in Alisson's arms, the goalie fired fast and wide, Salah made Joao Cancelo look old and scored the golden goal for the Reds.
On the other hand, Haaland remained without a goal in the Premier League for the first time in over two months and for the second time in total. In the hectic final phase, Liverpool coach Jürgen Klopp saw a red card for referee criticism.
Power outage delays Arsenal match
A few hours earlier, the Arsenal match at Elland Road had been halted 0-0 after 69 seconds due to a power failure. As Leeds announced, the power failure caused technical problems in the referee's communication with his assistants.
Then Bukayo Saka scored the decisive goal (35'), and Leeds professional Patrick Bamford missed a penalty in the 64th minute.
Chelsea celebrate fifth win in a row
The Chelsea match-winner was Mason Mount. First, he scored after an unsuccessful head defense by Tyrone Mings (6th) and finally with a free kick (65th).
Chelsea keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga made excellent saves several times. It was Chelsea's fifth win in a row across all competitions, before that there had been a 1-1 draw against Salzburg at Stamford Bridge in the Champions League.
The visitors had the best chance of winning in Manchester through ex-Rapid striker Joelinton with a double hit from the bar. Manchester star Cristiano Ronaldo has been unable to make any significant moves, remaining with just two goals this season.
