The Portuguese football team beat Uruguay 2:0 in the 2nd round of Group H of the World Cup and has already secured a place in the round of 16. It was not a particularly likable duel, it was played hard and fighting on both sides, and the Portuguese came to the triumph practically without a single real chance.
In the first half, Uruguay had the best chance when Bentancur in a great solo breakthrough in the 32nd minute got in front of the Portugal goalkeeper, but Costa made a great save and saved his net. The question about the winner was solved in the 54th minute.
Bruno Fernandes crossed from the left side, the ball flew over everyone, even Ronaldo, who was in the box and ended up in the Uruguayan's net to give Portugal a 1:0 lead. In the end, Uruguay threw all its cards into the attack, and tried to make changes, but failed to get at least a point.
In the 75th minute, Maxi Gomez hit the post from a long distance, and then Luis Suarez and Giorgian de Arrascaeta missed great chances. The penalty came in stoppage time when in the 93rd minute Bruno Fernandes scored the final 2:0.
Portugal will play against South Korea in the last round and can confirm first place with a point, while Uruguay and Ghana will probably decide the question of the second passenger from this group to the round of 16.
Fernando Santos was pleased with what he saw.
"We are satisfied today, because we can move into the new stage," Santos said, commenting that he didn't see the result as a revenge for Uruguay's win over his side in the 2018 World Cup.
"Those were different circumstances." "Two wins from two games is what I wanted for the team," he said, brushing aside controversy over whether Fernandes or Cristiano Ronaldo actually scored his side's opening goal as the midfielder's cross evaded everyone on its way into the Uruguay net.I think it was a great match, my team played well and the rest doesn't matter," laughed Santos, who demanded more from his side.
"We need to improve in our combinations and to prevent our opponents in attacking our area. There are things to improve, but we need to focus on positive aspects," commented the Portugal coach. "We are going to look after our injured players, but we will have a side to win the next game.
I trust my players, and anyone who plays will do well," he concluded.
Bruno Fernandes, the Portuguese double goalscorer, has a similar attitude as the coach.
“The most important thing is that we achieved our aim which is to be in the next round,” said Fernandes.
“I celebrated as if it had been Cristiano’s goal. It seemed to me that he had touched the ball. My aim was to cross the ball for him”.
