Harry Maguire is a player who is probably the most criticized player in the world of football. However, it seems that his coaches, Erik ten Hag and Gareth Southgate, have enormous confidence in Maguire and believe that he has the necessary qualities.
It was Erik ten Hag who spoke about Maguire at yesterday's press conference and expressed his dissatisfaction with how much Maguire is criticized. ‘I have said many times, it is disrespectful, he doesn’t deserve it, he is a great player, he gives great performances,’ -Erik ten Hag said, as quoted by METRO!
‘It is crazy but it is how it works. Harry has to block this by performances.’ Erik ten Hag revealed how this defender is coping with yet another poor performance; ‘Good, you see his career, it is a great career and has a lot to come, he has to block it by good performances.’
Harry Maguire emphasized a few days ago that he does not look back at the criticism.
Maguire knew what it meant to play for United. Playing for such a club there are huge chances that you will be the 'target' of criticism. The English defender wants to show with his performances that he is a player who deserves a place in the team.
Although the reactions of the fans make it seem that it is too late for that, Maguire still has faith in himself. ‘I would not say I am a person who struggles with pressure mentally. I have been through a lot in the last couple of years and I have been Manchester United captain for nearly four years,’ Maguire said.
‘You take a huge lot of responsibility and everything that comes with it – and that is a lot of bad as well as good. But it was a huge honour (to play for England against Scotland). It was a hostile environment – when you hear the national anthem and the way they disrespect that – and they piled pressure on myself. I would not say I am used to it, but I can deal with it.’
