Memphis Grizzlies superstar Ja Morant shared his feelings of gratitude and responsibility as he prepares for his season debut following a 25-game suspension. Morant’s return is highly anticipated, not just by fans and his team but also by the player himself, who sees basketball as a therapeutic outlet.

Morant, a two-time All-Star, acknowledged the difficulty of his time away from the game, citing some “horrible days” during his suspension. He expressed his appreciation for the support he received from his family, friends, the Grizzlies organization, and through therapy.

“It's pretty much all I could lean on at that time,” Morant said. “Obviously basketball is something I've been doing pretty much my whole life. Something that's therapeutic for me. Obviously taking that away, it makes it tougher”.

The Grizzlies star also felt a sense of guilt over the team’s struggles in his absence.
“I take full responsibility of that obviously, even though I'm not on the floor. Decisions I made didn't allow me to be out there to go to battle with my team,” he said.

The Road to Rehabilitation

Morant’s off-the-court issues led to his suspension, including an incident where he displayed a handgun during a live video on social media. NBA commissioner Adam Silver’s decision to suspend Morant came with a stipulation for him to follow a specific program, which Morant complied with.

Silver noted Morant's compliance and said he would have a "check-in" conversation with him before his return. Morant described this conversation as "good" and reiterated his commitment to better decision-making.

“I feel like the only way for us is to go is up,” Morant said, signaling his optimism for the future.

Anticipation for a Strong Comeback

While Morant is eager to return to the game, he is mindful of not putting undue pressure on himself. He is “super excited” to rejoin the Grizzlies and is optimistic about the team's prospects, despite the challenges they face. His focus now is not just on being a basketball player but also a father, role model, brother, and son.
