Spanish tennis player Rafael Nadal easily qualified for the round of 16 of the Us Open after defeating Frenchman Richard Gasquet 3:0 in sets (6:0, 6:1, 7:5). The opening two sets were a game of "cat and mouse" in which the Spaniard completely destroyed Gasquet, who only in the third set managed to mitigate the defeat to some extent and not experience real shame.
In the next round, Nadal expects a duel against the home representative Francis Tiafoe. “Now I believe I can beat him. ... I’m definitely going to come after him,” said the 24-year-old Tiafoe, who is from Maryland.
The key? “Match his intensity from the first point to the last,” Tiafoe said after getting past No 14 Diego Schwartzman 7-6 (7), 6-4, 6-4. “You can’t really have any dips. He takes advantage of it”.
Croatian tennis player Marin ÄiliÄ defeated the British Daniel Evans 3:1 in sets (7:6, 6:7, 6:2, 7:5), and in the round of 16 won a big clash with Spanish tennis player Carlos Alcaraz. In the women's competition, Karolina Pliškova from the Czech Republic beat Belinda BenÄiÄ from Switzerland 2:1 (5:7, 6:4, 6:3) in an exciting match after almost two and a half hours of play.
The world's number one tennis player Iga Swiatek went further, defeating Lauren Davis 6:3 and 6:4 without any problems.
Man Attempted to Enter U.S. Open with Gun
A man with a gun was detained on Saturday afternoon in front of the US Open field, writes the New York Post.
A source told The Post that a man tried to enter the tournament with a gun and brandished it at officers, after which security confronted the gunman. According to that report, "When security personnel confronted the gun-toting man, he allegedly pulled out the weapon and brandished it at a cop before running toward the parking lot." At one point, he pulled a weapon and pointed it at the officer before running toward the parking lot.
He is said to have tried to flee in a vehicle with another man, but they were stopped by police. He then got out of the car and threw the gun on the ground, after which the unnamed man holding the gun was arrested, while the driver remains at large.
The police announced that no shots were fired and that no one was injured, and that the man was arrested in the parking lot.
