Roger Federer and Nick Kyrgios have faced each other seven times in their careers and, thanks to their spectacular style of play, they have always created challenges that are as exciting as they are fun. The 20-time Grand Slam champion, who retired last September at the Laver Cup, defeated the Australian on six out of seven occasions.
The only defeat came at the Masters 1000 in Madrid in 2015. One of the most interesting matches is certainly the one played at the 2017 Miami Open; game decided by three very hard tie-breaks. On that occasion, Federer managed to raise his head again in the last and decisive set after throwing away two match points in the second set.
Just remembering the match lost against the Swiss in Miami, Kyrgios launched a sensational proposal to Federer by hinting at an exhibition match through his Instagram account. “Exhibition match in Switzerland? Do we do it again?" wrote the Canberra native.
Federer still hasn't answered the story of Kyrgios, but the idea of playing against the Australian in his Switzerland could really tickle him.
Nick Kyrgios and Roger Federer in an exhibition match?
Kyrgios played his last tournament at the doubles ATP Finals in Turin.
The Australian has yet to make his 2023 debut due to a lateral meniscus tear. An injury that forced him to undergo surgery and miss the Australian Open and the Masters 1000 in Indian Wells and Miami. Kyrgios has not yet set a certain date for his return to the court, but he has returned to training in the gym with the aim of not losing his physical condition completely.
The idea of the finalist of the last edition of Wimbledon could be to compete in one of the last two 1000m on clay to present himself at Roland Garros, a tournament in which he has not participated since 2017. Everything will depend on how his body responds and the desire to play on a surface that he has never loved.
