Roger Federer will be present at the Masters 1000 in Shanghai in 2023, as a guest of honour. The former Swiss champion, who retired last September on the occasion of the Laver Cup, was strongly desired by the event, which will celebrate the return of the ATP circuit to the Asian country, after what happened due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The tournament, won by the 20-time Grand Slam champion twice, will have a format similar to that of Madrid and Rome. In Shanghai, which kicks off on October 4, Roger will also be recognized for his great tennis career and his contribution to the world of tennis with the Rolex Shanghai Masters Iconic Athlete award.
The Swiss Maestro said: "I am very happy to have been named Icon Athlete of the Rolex Shanghai Masters for 2023. I remember coming to Shanghai for the first time for the stadium opening and being close friends with Juss Event and the tournament organizers.
I am happy to continue the story and look forward to seeing you all in October."
Roger Federer will be honored in Shanghai for his outstanding career
Despite having now retired, Roger remains an icon for the world of tennis, a discipline to which he will still remain inextricably linked.
Even Wimbledon, a tournament he won 8 times (absolute record), has made it known that he wants it at the next edition. This was announced by AELTC president Ian Hewitt: “He is obviously a great champion. We have a very close relationship.
I am pleased to say that Roger Federer has come to visit us and as a member he is welcome at any time," said Hewitt. "And yes, we will celebrate his successes appropriately at Wimbledon in due course, to find out more," he guaranteed, igniting the enthusiasm of the fans of the 20-time Grand Slam champion.
The doors of the oldest and most prestigious tournament in the world will always be open to the former world number one, who at this point will be expected in the next 2023 edition
