Khamzat Chimaev posts a meme joking about his weight miss for UFC 279

It can be assumed that the UFC leaders are currently quite angry with Khamzat Chimaev, who most likely ruined the "main event" of tomorrow's UFC 279 event. The Chechen-Swedish welterweight exceeded the upper limit of the welterweight category by 7.5 lbs (3.40 kg) and thereby compromised the match against Nate Diaz.

According to reporter Cole Shelton, several sources from Diaz's team state that Nate will definitely not fight Chimaev. Negotiations are currently underway for a replacement opponent, with Tony Ferguson likely to be the main favorite.

There is also a chance that Diaz will not play.

"Another source inside Diaz’s camp has told me the “Khamzat fight is officially OFF”. They add Diaz and the UFC are currently negotiating to fight a new unnamed opponent, with Ferguson likely the lead front runner for that.

But there’s a chance he doesn’t fight at all. #UFC279," wrote Cole Shelton on Twitter.

Khamzat Chimaev on the other hand could fight Kevin Holland who has a match scheduled with Daniel Rodriguez, but it remains to be seen how the UFC will handle that situation.

In the meantime, Chimaev, who was smiling at the weigh-in despite the huge overshoot, decided to make a joke on his Twitter profile as well. "Darren Till, it's his fault," Chimaev wrote on Twitter, while also posting a humorous montage of their photo together.

Khamzat's best friend also once competed in the welterweight division, and in his eight UFC appearances in that division, he missed the scale twice.

In the match against Jessin Ayari, Till exceeded the limit by 5 pounds, while against Stephen Thompson he was 3.5 pounds too heavy. Chimaev surpassed all that with his huge overshoot, and maybe it's not the right time to make such jokes, because, in the end, it's all about unprofessionalism and a lack of respect for the opponent and the organization.

It is not yet known if Chimaev’s bout with Diaz will proceed given the enormous weight miss. UFC 279 takes place Saturday at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
