The long-awaited UFC 280 takes place this weekend, where we will find out who will be the lightweight champion after almost six months. Charles Oliveira and Islam Makhachev have been in Abu Dhabi for days, but there is also featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski, who will serve if for some reason any of the previously mentioned two are unable to perform on Saturday night.
Former champion Charles Oliveira does not hide that he wants to face Volkanovski twice. Once for the lightweight belt and once for the featherweight category belt. "First of all, we're gonna focus on what's gonna happen here...
My timing is to actually fight in Brazil afterwards regardless. If we're gonna make this happen against Volkanovski, we're going to have it two ways. We're gonna at 70 [kg] [lightweight], and then we're going to fight at 66 [featherweight] at the end of the year...
I can fight there [Australia] in February, but for his belt... Surely [I can make the weight], I have a great team for this, to actually get down to 66." said Oliveira.
Volkanovski has nothing against it.
In fact, he believes that if anyone can be the winner in such two matches, it is him: “Mate, let’s do it,” Volkanovski told MMA Junkie.
“If anyone could do it, it’s me. If he can get that done, let’s do it. Obviously I don’t know if it makes too much sense, but I’m down. I’m down for whatever”. He continued, “I don’t know if that can even happen, but if they’re happy to do it, I’m happy to do it.
It’s as simple as that”. He also touched on the attack on the lightweight belt: “Seems like my next fight will definitely be the lightweight title,” Volkanovski said. “So that’s why I put myself in that position so let’s see what happens”.
Volkanovski's fight against any of the actors in Saturday's "main event" would probably be a spectacle, but we hope we won't be watching it now. When the lightweight division finally has a champion after Saturday, it will be exciting to see who the next opponent of the world's first "P4P" fighter is.
