Gunnar Nelson, a fan favorite in the UFC welterweight division, is a 34-year-old Icelandic fighter known for his ground skills with 12 submission wins in his career. Despite his expertise in grappling, he is always willing to stand and fight.
He has only suffered one stoppage loss in his career, when Santiago Ponzinibbio knocked him out in the first round of their fight in mid-2017. Gunnar Nelson was once considered a rising star in the UFC's welterweight division, but his career took a turn for the worse after his loss to Ponzinibbi.
He managed to secure one win, but then suffered two consecutive losses, to Leon Edwards and Gilbert Burns in 2019. He took a long hiatus from fighting, due to various reasons, before returning to the cage in March of 2022. He fought Takashi Sato at a UFC event in London, and secured a unanimous decision victory after three rounds.
Nelson's Return to the Cage
Although fans were hoping for more frequent appearances from Gunnar Nelson following his comeback, they will have to wait until the next UFC event in London. It has been announced that Nelson will fight again on March 18th, as part of the UFC 286 event in London.
His opponent has also been confirmed as Daniel Rodriguez, an unranked fighter. In 2022, Rodriguez had an interesting year. He was supposed to fight Kevin Holland in September at the UFC 279 event, but due to some reshuffling, he ended up facing Li Jingliang.
He won the match by a controversial referee's decision, and only two months later, he stepped into the cage against Neil Magny. Daniel Rodriguez will attempt to bounce back from his loss to Neil Magny, which ended his streak of four consecutive victories, as he faces Gunnar Nelson in London.
Nelson will have the support of the home crowd, making it a challenging match for Rodriguez. The match promises to be an exciting one and fans are hopeful that both fighters will make it through training camp without any injuries that would impede the fight from taking place.
