Umar Nurmagomedov makes comment on Khabib Nurmagomedov’s Retirement

In recent years, fighters from Dagestan have risen to the top in multiple weight classes in MMA organizations, many of whom are descendants of Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov. Khabib retired as the undefeated UFC champion and was succeeded by Islam Makhachev.

Umar Nurmagomedov, a 26-year-old with a 15-0 record, fights tonight as part of UFC Fight Night 217 against Raoni Barcelos, an experienced and formidable opponent. A loss for Umar would put him far from the top 10. Umar's cousin Khabib will not be in his corner during the fight.

Khabib decided to retire from the sport at the beginning of this year and is currently taking a break to focus on his family. “He’s my brother and with me he can’t go away,” Nurmagomedov said at UFC Vegas 67 media day.

“I was calling him, talking with him about this fight, about cutting weight. [Khabib] was stopping too much flying.

Khabib Takes Indefinite Break

Khabib has been actively involved in the preparation of his relatives and close friends, despite not fighting himself.

He spent most of the year traveling and supporting fighters in their training camps. He has now decided to take an indefinite break and the fighters he previously supported will have to continue without him. Umar stated at a press conference that Khabib is not fully retiring, but will not be as actively involved in preparation and match participation.

“When we will go home, I will train with him. I’m going to go to his home and say to him, let’s go to training. This guy, all the time training. He cannot stop”. “Of course, this is a very big motivation when he’s close,” Nurmagomedov said.

“I don’t know how we can be better. Everything, if you have to train and you do a good camp, do hard work and you’re ready, this does not matter. You have to go inside the cage [by yourself],” “I’m ready to be champion,” Nurmagomedov said.

“I’m ready for a fight with anybody in the world. It doesn’t matter which organization is the champion, I’m ready. I was training with very, very tough guys and they didn’t do nothing. I think I’m ready.
