Fight fans all around the world and the MMA community were awestruck with Colby Covington’s surprising appearance at the weigh ins for UFC 286: Kamaru Usman vs Leon Edwards 3. However, He was there solely to fulfil his purpose of being a backup fighter, where he would step in if either Usman or Edwards fail to make it inside the ring.

It’s been a year since Colby Covington last fought in the octagon; it was against his former friend Jorge Masvidal. Perhaps that is why fans and supporters of the event were amazed by his appearance, he hasn’t spoken about fighting in the future, and the MMA community must be eagerly waiting for his return.

Dana white on Colby covington showing up at the weigh ins

“We always have a backup. My son actually hit me up and said, Dad, I don’t understand. What’s going on? Why did Colby Covington weigh in? So I had to explain it to him.

There’s always a backup for a title fight, it just never gets as much attention as Colby did today”. said Dana White. Colby Covington weighs in at exactly 170 pounds which qualifies him to be the backup fighter for ufc 286.

In a recent press conference, when a reporter asked both Kamaru usman and Leon Edwards if they knew Colby Covington was the backup fighter for UFC 286, they replied saying, “This is the first time I am hearing that”.

It is unlikely for a fighter to get injured before fight night, but anything can happen, and if such a thing happens, the main event will still be super entertaining. It would be very interesting to see who Covington fights; next, he could possibly be facing the losing fighter from the main event and could potentially get a title shot after that.

He has secured a strong fan base, and they should expect to see him fight again in the ring this year. (Image source: Yahoo!Sports)
