The possibility of a potential match between Khamzat Chimaev and Kamaru Usman has already fired up fans with great enthusiasm; however, there has been a little hesitancy lately, and both fighters have been going back and forth.
Khamzat Chimaev made it quite clear in the past that he is ready to fight anybody at any weight provided that he gets an opportunity to ‘smash’ his opponents but recently, Chimaev has suggested that it should happen at middleweight.
Kamaru Usman is demanding the opposite; he wants Chimaev to fight at welterweight.
Kamaru Usman on fighting Khamzat Chimaev
Kamaru Usman is really interested in fighting Khamzat Chimaev, but only at welterweight; it will be interesting to see if Chimaev gets convinced in the future.
“You know, at the end of the day, I have been — and still am — the boogeyman of this division,” Usman said, as quoted by mmafighting.com. “I asked for the guy. If you want to fight — you want to be a champion — cut the ******* weight and come fight”.
Khamzat Chimaev responds
“Kamaru Usman, why are you talking about me?” Chimaev said, as quoted by mmafighting.com. “You said you want to fight [at middleweight].
The weight [is] no problem for you. You are the boogeyman but I am the wolf. Come up”. Two things can happen: either Kamaru Usman agrees to fight at middleweight, or Chimaev decides to fight at welterweight – the match between these dangerous fighters can take place before December.
Chimaev hasn’t fought for 10 months, and his return is much-awaited; a few more wins from here will secure Chimaev’s position as the next title challenger. On the flip side, Kamaru Usman is currently on a two match losing streak, and he would be looking forward to breaking the losing momentum with a comprehensive victory in his next match; if not Chimaev, we can expect Usman to fight against someone from the top 5 or top 10.
