The 6th ranked lightweight contender Mateusz Gamrot is on a steady incline and is just a few steps away from fighting someone from the top 5. Gamrot recently fought against Rafael Fiziev and secured a vicious 2nd round knockout win.
Gamrot wants to challenge himself further, and he looks forward to fighting the 1st ranked contender Charles Oliveira.
His strong interest in fighting Charles Oliveira comes from Oliveira’s grappling dominance; Oliveira’s rematch against Islam Makhchev will determine the chances for a fight between Gamrot and Oliveira to happen in the near future.Mateusz Gamrot has updated his professional to 23-2; he could return next in the starting phase of 2024.An unfortunate end to #UFCVegas79, but @Gamer_MMA is walking away with the win tonight. pic.twitter.com/JqOAXpdfB7 — UFC (@ufc) September 24, 2023
Mateusz Gamrot on fighting Charles Olivera
During the recent post-fight press conference, Mateusz Gamrot explained why he wants to fight Charles Oliveira and revealed if he will have a rematch with Rafael Fiziev or not.
“I know [Charles Oliveira] has a fight soon next month with the champ,” Gamrot said, as quoted by mmafighting.com. “My prediction — the result will be the same as last time, that Islam defends his belt.I can wait for Charles Oliveira until next year, maybe March, maybe May, we will be ready for him and I want to fight with him.
I would like to test myself against Charles Oliveira because he is the most dangerous guy on the ground, my previous opponents, every time [they would] stand up, stand up, and the ground is hott for everybody. But the next one, I would like to challenge myself on the ground.I want to show my really good skills in jiu-jitsu.
Gamrot on having a rematch with Rafeal Fiziev: I want to show how good I am on the ground. I think this guy will be the first guy in my career who will want to fight with me on the ground. We’ll see, Rafael is a good guy, I like him of course.
We have a good relationship. I wish him a quick recovery. I hope his injury is not so big. We’ll see. But this is not my decision. This decision is for the boss in the UFC.
