Shavkat Rakhmonov is one of the rare fighters in the UFC who is currently undefeated; in less than a week, he will face the well-known Stephen Thompson. A win will make Rakhmonov a strong prospect to claim the seat of being a title challenger.
Rakhmonov vs Thompson is just a week away (16th December), and the welterweight clash is featured in the UFC 296 main card. However, Rakhmonov isn’t interested in skipping the queue to the top; he recognizes that Belal Muhammed is most likely next for the title shot and is ready to wait for his own turn.
A win for Stephen Thompson will also play a huge role in opening new doors of opportunity – it’s a must win for both fighters. It promises to be one of the best welterweight fights of the year. Stephen Thompson believes he will finish Rakhmonov with his ground game, but Rakhmonov is confident in his ‘standing skills’ and can foresee putting on a great striking performance next Saturday night.
Shavkat Rakhmonov on getting a title shot
In a recent interview with Morning Kombat, Shavkat Rakhmonov spoke about fighting Stephen Thompson and explained how he’s not in a hurry to get a title shot. “It depends how he will act, but I think my standing game is not worse than his,” Rakhmonov said, as quoted by mmajunkie.usatoday.com. “I think I can beat him in standing game.
Nobody won him in standing game, but of course I mentioned that sometimes he misses shots, I never seen him lose by choke. Only one time I remember Anthony Pettis won by knockout”.
Rakhmonov on getting the title shot next
“I don’t know, it depends on what the UFC says, but I think Belal Muhammad also deserves the title shot, As of now he will backup this fight (Edwards vs. Covington), but of course I’m ready”.
