France is a country located in Western Europe and Southern Europe, but which also has territories spread across multiple oceans and other continents. France is a unitary constitutional republic, having a semi-presidential regime, of which Paris is the capital. France is the world's third largest nuclear power, one of the permanent members of the United Nations Security Council and a member of NATO.

It is also a member of the G7, the G20, the eurozone, the Schengen area and hosts the headquarters of the Council of Europe, the European Parliament and UNESCO. France possesses a certain influence in political, economic, military and cultural matters in Europe and in the world as a middle power. The French language is, after English, the second most studied language in the world and is one of the six official languages of the UN. France has a large number of embassies and consulates, second only to that of the United States, and has military bases on every continent.
